Likeability and competence in the workplace for better careers

A number of years ago, I had completed a Managerial Mindset Course with the Wharton University #whartonuniversity and amongst the various modules there was a module on networking

A graph on likeability
Where are you now and where do you want to be?

This pictorial which I found on Linked in earlier today shows the different categories of approaches that are commonplace in the workplace.

For my own contribution to the exercise that we were given I have written without any corrections today:

"As a professional for over 20 years I have met, worked with and become acquainted with many people within the broad supply chain. I am familiar with the concepts of social capital and see that networks drive performance. I actively seek allies and identify them by their position, influence and purpose. I have a large network formed from not only meeting people who have a mutual commercial interest but also see themselves as game-changers with novel views. The Parise, Whalen & Todd Study on Twitter users was revelatory for me. And I am actively using social media, for example as a means to identify myself within networks and to find out about others.   I am careful about identifying redundant ties in my diverse network, as there are many diamonds in the rough.

I can identify in myself that an emphasis on ethics and potential confidentiality issues may restrict me in growing networks, and I am satisfied that within my network I have taken some steps to create an image that information is power and is treated respectfully.  The cost+benefit challenge is an opportunity for improvement and time is key.    Reciprocity – I am familiar with. I have watched others in action in my earlier years of development and enter into arrangements on the basis that I do not expect a return in value.

I enjoyed the graph on likeability and competence and the loveable star is the target area.  I am actively working on not being so intense and becoming better company to complement my competency. I will start again to broaden my net after joining a new company ( a recommendation by a member of my network), and took the initiative to create a new part of my network following review of the course material.  Why wait?"

Being armed with educational qualifications or expertise on any particular area is half the battle, the rest lies in how we approach engagements; the incompetent jerk, the competent jerk, the lovable star and the lovable fool.

Take a look around you and see who falls into what part of the quadrant and see what you can do to get into that lovable star section # leadership. It can guide you as you network and put you in a better place to influence.
