Career Advice Tips 2024

Some of the questions that have come up over the last three weeks:

1.       When looking at starting your own business, check on local grants and training that are low on cost – the LEO’s (Local Enterprise Offices) @LEO do a pretty useful Start your Own Business @SYOB course. Start there. It’s free – yes there are some criteria to meet to get on the course but it’s a low enough barrier to entry.

2.       There are many, many genuine operators who will give you good services and advice when it comes to advertising and support but there are many who won’t and they will charge you. When at the cusp of making a decision, we can be a little disorientated and the urge to move quickly can be strong especially if you’re making a new career move or setting up a business, or looking at an area that you see an opportunity in and it’s best to establish their credentials as best you can. Often people you know will know people who know someone. Linked in is the most reliable social network, in my opinion - you can check on backgrounds, experience and their network #networking

3.       It is not unusual to encounter the point of view that “I could do any role in that industry”, and it may well be the case that you believe you can, but will an employer also believe that? And how can you prepare to represent yourself to prove that perspective? #careercoaching

4.       As people start to start to grow their careers, attaining a different role with more authority may mean a change in company or industry. We can strike lucky with the right company and role coming available where we are the number 1 candidate, but it may not turn out like that.  More and more companies are looking for someone who will fit in and address a specific competence that they’re lacking.

5.       Companies having “preferred candidates” exists ie. they have identified someone but are going through the interview process to validate their decision, or are being careful with compliance. There’s nothing wrong with this. They may already have a star performer in their own staff. It’s hard to detect this. It shouldn’t stop us stepping forward and getting support during this process can make a big difference. The post interview experience is as valuable as the interview experience itself.

6.       Headcount turnover is still a big issue for companies #staffretention as there are more and more options for people in industries that thirty years ago we couldn’t have imagined would exist.
